USMCA TAKES EFFECT AND REPLACES NAFTA TRADE ERA

As of July 1, 2020, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (“USMCA”) went into effect replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement (“NAFTA”). The new agreement was signed by the U.S., Mexico and Canada in 2018 and approved by Congress earlier this year.

No changes were made to the Immigration Chapter, and TN visas still remain intact. However, among the key changes, USMCA creates an incentive to build cars and trucks in North America, provides strengthened labor laws in Mexico, more market access to US dairy farmers, new benefits for the technology sector and a budget to address environmental problems.
