Public Hearing on Establishment of Office for Caribbean Affairs (OCA) to be held this Wednesday, June 19th!
June 19, 2019
The Mayoral Advisory Commissions on Caribbean Community Affairs (MACCCA) was established in the District of Columbia (DC) by several Mayors, however, there has been no supporting office or agency dedicated to the District’s Caribbean community, as is the case with other cultural heritage and ethnic-focused commissions.
A public hearing will take place this Wednesday June 19, 2019 at 2:30 pm in Washington DC, to discuss the establishment of an Office on Caribbean Affairs (OCA) and on the passing of B23-0201, the Office of the Caribbean Affairs Establishment Act of 2019.
B23-0201 establishes an Office on Caribbean Affairs in Washington, DC, to monitor the delivery of services and make policy recommendations that affect the District of Columbia's Caribbean community. An OCA would make policy recommendations to the Mayor and Council regarding affordable housing, health, education, employment, social services, public safety, business opportunities, and cultural heritage preservation as these relate to the District's Caribbean community. Volunteer advisory commissions are purely volunteer, and while they do excellent work advocating on issues important to the District’s Caribbean community, a dedicated Office of Caribbean Affairs (OCA) would better serve the District's Caribbean community through funding that will facilitate capacity building.
The hearing will include testimony on why establishing an Office on Caribbean Affairs is necessary in the District of Columbia. Managing Attorney of Williams Global Law, Simone Williams is scheduled to testify at this historic legislation.
The public hearing will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 2:30 p.m., Room 120 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave., NW in Washington, DC.
If you live in the District of Columbia, please consider attending the hearing in person. Register at this link.
