The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, also known as the Green Card Lottery, was created in 1990 and is administered by the U.S. Department of State. Those born in countries, which sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the previous five years, are not eligible for this lottery. For DV-2018, nationals of the following countries are not eligible for the visa: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam.
